Vietnam Era Veterans Honor Flight Update, May 1st, 2018

For the past three and half years there has been quite a bit of effort, time and dedication in having an Honor Flight for our alum that were Vietnam Era Veterans. You have read the articles in the alumni newsletter describing the work the team of volunteers has been actively pursuing. It is with great honor that we can say the dream is about to become a reality in the Fall of this year. Thank you to everyone for supporting this noble cause!

TENTATIVE: The Honor Flight is scheduled for Tuesday, October 16. There will be a pre-flight dinner at the ITOO Hall the evening before the flight. The flight will depart Wayne Downing International Airport at 6 AM and return to Peoria around 930 PM, to a very heartwarming and emotional homecoming.

The Washington D.C. tour will consist of visits to all of the War Memorials and Arlington Cemetery. Each Veteran must travel with a “Guardian.” The Guardian may be selected by the Veteran (cannot be a spouse) or one can be provided by the Greater Peoria Honor Flight. There is a 2-3 hour instructional course the Guardian must complete and they are also required to pay a $500 fee. The flight will be of no cost to the Veteran.

We have about 35 Veterans assigned to this flight. One graduated from Bergan with the remainder being Spalding graduates, ranging from the Classes of 1958 – 1967. Overall, we have identified nearly 300 Vietnam Era Veterans from the Spalding/AOL/Bergan graduating Classes of 1946 – 1970.
