An exciting and promising new chapter in the history of Catholic secondary education in central Illinois has begun! On September 28, 2012, Bishop Daniel R. Jenky, CSC and others broke ground at the site that is being developed into the new Peoria Notre Dame High School campus. Peoria Notre Dame traces its roots back 150 years, and was created when three Catholic High Schools; the Academy of Our Lady, Spalding Insti- tute, and Bergan High School merged in 1988. The ground breaking and blessing ceremony marked the beginning of a multi-phased building project that when finished, will provide students in the tri-county area with a uniquely Catholic, full service campus that focuses on academic excellence, athletic opportunities, spiritual and social growth and development. A very special opportunity exists for parents, alumni, classes, teachers, faculty and friends of Peoria Notre Dame to help support this campaign effort by purchasing a paver that will be incorporated into the gateway entrance design and around the statue of Our Lady. Buying a paver will give you the opportunity to leave a permanent legacy that will continue to support Catholic education in the greater Peoria area for another 150 years.
he kids love it,” laughs Pat Matarelli, patting her green apron and casting a satisfied glance across the Peoria Notre Dame Commons. “It’s their highlight day!” Wednesday, March 20, 2013, students at Peoria Notre Dame celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at lunch. Continuing a tradition going back more than twenty-five years, the Irish noon meal is a traditional St. Patrick’s Day feast. The Wednesday meal centers around 180 lbs. of corned beef in 30 Lb. Briskets, first slowly roasted covered for five hours at 325 degrees on Monday. Allowed to cool overnight, the meat, spiced with pepper, mustard seed, and other seasonings, is sliced on Tuesday, and then carefully warmed to melded spice perfection for Wednesday’s lunch. On Tuesday, preparations accelerate with the boiling of 100 lbs of small, red, Irish new potatoes. Sliced and seasoned, the potatoes are slathered with seven lbs of butter and sprinkled with 1½ lbs of parsley. Early Wednesday morning, 20 heads of cabbage are boiled to accompany the meat and potatoes. After partial cooking, and half the water is drained from the cabbage, drippings from the corned beef are added for the finishing touch. As the hour arrives, food lines are prepared to dish up the Peoria Notre Dame St Patrick’s Day Irish meal. More than 450 helpings are served, including some take-home packages, topped off with the final addition of 3 lbs of horseradish. Standing proudly from her place at the table, moving quickly toward growing food lines, Pat Matarelli calls back over her shoulder, a note of satisfaction in her voice, “They’re all waiting for it.”

Friday, February 15, 2013 I wanted to write to update you on the events taking place today at PND. Last night a lively Facebook discussion amongst students and former students took place and grew over the offering of extra credit by a member of our teaching staff for students to attend the Preserve Marriage lobby day next week. As you know the issue of gay marriage is a hotly debated topic in our country and in our state. As a school within the Catholic Diocese of Peoria part of our mission is to proclaim the Church’s teachings. These teachings are often at odds with our current culture but our obligation is to teach the faith. In the past we have participated in the March for Life, and religious freedom rallies. We do not coerce students to attend these events and they choose to do so freely. It has been communicated that extra credit will not be offered in association with attending this event. I’ve attached for you the communications we’ve sent to our students regarding this issue and also included is a letter for parents from our President Monsignor Merdian. Additionally attached is a letter from Cardinal George. In the end it is important to note the Catholic Church does not hate homosexuals. We believe that all people are created in the image and likeness of God and are worthy of dignity and respect regardless of their sexual orientation. Yours in Christ, Charlie A.

How long have you been employed at PND?

Six Years

Would you please describe your job (in a nutshell)?

“I teach Junior year theology which includes two courses: Eccesiology and Sacraments Christology and Discipleship Senior year World Literature”

What might surprise your friends or colleagues to learn about your job?

What surprises my friends who are not teachers is the amount of time outside of school required to prep for my classes and to grade student work.

Which TV show(s) do you never miss?

I watch very little TV. I don’t even have cable – gasp! What little I sporadically watch is through Netflix. I enjoy Sherlock (BBC), Psych, and … what will be a surprise to many … Sons on Anarchy.

If you could meet anyone in the world—dead or alive—who would it be and what would you say to them?

If I could meet anyone, it would be Mother Teresa. I would thank her for be a blessing to the dying of Calcutta and a beautiful model of living the Gospel to the rest of us.

What are three things you never leave the house without (besides wallet/purse, keys, cell phone)?

My purse, keys, and cellphone are the only things that I never leave home without. I like to travel light.

You’ve been given access to a time machine. Where are you going, and what time period?

When I was five years old, I received a miniature of Disney’s King Arthur’s castle. Ever since then I have had a fascination with medieval England.

What reality show would you go on and why?

Since I watch so little television, I am not familiar with any reality shows other than Hell’s Kitchen and Survivor, and I have only watched a few episodes of each of those. Since I am not a chef, I would say Survivor. The physical and social aspects of it would be exciting challenges.

Who is the most famous person you have met?

Fred Couples at a practice round of the Masters

What was your first job, and what was it like?

My first job was at Ponderosa Steak House on Knoxville Ave. here in Peoria. I bussed tables and ran the roll and drink stations. I came home every night smelling of cheap grilled steak and a side of baked potato.

What is the best part about working at PND?

The best part of working at PND is that my faith and relationship with God is encouraged as the foundation of my relationships with my students and colleagues. And I get paid for that.

What do you do when you aren’t working?

Being a single mom of two teenagers and two adult children takes up most of my time outside of work. But I do enjoy reading, gardening, and an evening out with friends and family listening to the live music of South Side Cindy and the Sliptones–the band in which my older brother plays. I absolutely love to travel on school breaks.
