St. Patrick's Day at Peoria Notre Dame
“The kids love it,” laughs Pat Matarelli, patting her green apron and casting a satisfied glance across the Peoria Notre Dame Commons. “It’s their highlight day!”
On Wednesday, March 14, 2012, students at Peoria Notre Dame celebrated St. Patrick’s Day at lunch. Continuing a tradition going back more than twenty-five years, the Irish noon meal was a traditional St. Patrick’s Day feast.
The Wednesday meal was centered around 100 lbs of corned beef, first slowly roasted from scratch on Monday, March 12. Allowed to cool overnight, the meat was sliced on Tuesday and then carefully warmed to melded spice perfection for Wednesday’s lunch.
On Tuesday, preparations accelerated with the boiling of 100 lbs of Irish new potatoes, their flavor enhanced by the addition of the meat drippings to the water. Sliced and seasoned, the potatoes were slathered with seven lbs of butter and sprinkled with 1½ lbs of parsley.
Early Wednesday morning, 50 lbs of cabbage was boiled to accompany the meat and potatoes.
As the hour arrived, food lines were prepared to dish up the Peoria Notre Dame St Patrick’s Day Irish meal. More than 450 helpings were served, topped off with the final addition of 3 lbs of horseradish.
Standing proudly from her place at the table, moving quickly toward growing food lines, Pat Matarelli called back over her shoulder, an Irish lilt of satisfaction in her voice, “They’re all waiting for it.”
Christmas Food Basket Drives Set Record
The Peoria Notre Dame food basket drive traditionally involves the entire Peoria Notre Dame community in providing food for needy families. This year, we continued our tradition of sacrifice, generosity, and cooperation in the preparation of over 475 fifty-pound baskets, surpassing last year's record of 300 baskets.
We sponsored approximately twenty Neighborhood Basket Drives. Parishes included were St. Monica, St. Sharbel, Holy Family, St. Thomas, St Jude, St. Mary of Kickapoo, St. Vincent de Paul, St. Mark, St. Joseph, St. Mary of Lourdes, and others.
Peoria Notre Dame students canvassed neighborhoods for a combined total of one thousand student hours. Others spent about two hundred hours preparing the food for distribution.
A group of students journeyed to a nearby packing plant to load and return to Peoria Notre Dame more than a ton of canned food. Approximately fifty additional student hours were spent in preparing these cans.
The Peoria Notre Dame Christmas Basket Drive Committee prepared and place notes of Christmas greeting for the recipient family in each box of food.
The Packing and Sorting Committee worked for some two hours per day all during the drive.
All Peoria Notre Dame students were expected to participate in Advisory and House drives which resulted in the contribution of almost 6,000 more items.
The extra-ordinary contributions committee solicited food from area businesses which have contributed generously in the past. These have included Meister Brothers, Proctor Hospital, Aldi, Save-a-Lot, and our neighbors Potter and Anderson and Schnuck's.
The extended Peoria Notre Dame community also supports the project in important ways. For example, St. Vincent DePaul Societies have again distributed the food throughout the parishes.
WMBD Radio and WEEK Television have interviewed students, teachers, and parents on the air to give the Peoria Notre Dame Christmas Basket Drive community-wide publicity.
Last year, over three hundred baskets were packed in the largest such effort in Central Illinois. This year, a basket drive record was set at over 475 baskets with an average weight of over fifty pounds.
No family wanting a Peoria Notre Dame food basket has ever been turned away.

House Councils and Student Government
In an effort to develop leadership skill among students at a house level, Peoria Notre Dame adopted a House Council system in the 2010-2011 school year. The House Councils are comprised of three freshman, three sophomores, three juniors, and three seniors who have been elected by the members of the house. The head teachers of each house lead the House Council.
The House Council meets primarily during advisory and is responsible for tasks within the house. Sophomore, junior, and senior representatives are elected for a one-year term each spring. Candidates must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, have a petition signed by 50 members of their house, and give a speech before members of their house in order to run.
The Peoria Notre Dame High School Student Government operates at an all-school level. It is comprised of six freshman, six sophomores, six juniors, and six seniors. Each of the six houses has one freshman, one sophomore, one junior, and one senior representative.
Student Government members are elected from within their House Council; the members of the House Council elect representatives from their House Council to serve on Student Government. They serve one-year terms. Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and serve on their House Council in order to serve on Student Government.
Ms. Curtis and Mrs. Madison are the moderators of Student Government. They meet weekly during the school year, primarily before school.
Students interested in serving on Student Government or House Councils for school year 2011-2012 should see Mrs. Madison or Ms. Curtis for petitions and instructions.
